Accession Number

An accession number is a unique identifier assigned to a particular genome or protein sequence? to uniquely identify it in a database.

GenBank

The GenBank accession number is a combination of letters and numbers that are usually one letter followed by five digits (e.g., M12345) or two letters followed by six digits (e.g., AC123456). The accession number for a particular record will not change even if the author submits a request to change some of the information in the record. Take note that an accession number is a unique identifier for a complete sequence record, while a Sequence Identifier, such as a Version, GI, or ProteinID, is an identification number assigned just to the sequence data. The NCBI Entrez System is searchable by accession number using the ACCN search field.

GenBank accession numbers are stored in the Custom Attributes Database. The table below lists the NMPDR genomes that have associated accession numbers.

RefSeq

In RefSeq, an accession number is the unique identification number for a complete RefSeq sequence record. RefSeq accession numbers are written as two letters followed by an underscore and six digits (e.g., NT_123456). The first two letters of the RefSeq accession number indicate the type of sequence included in the record as described below:

Prefix Example Meaning
NT NT_079839 constructed genomic contigs
NM NM_179831 conserved DNA sequences constructed from Messenger RNA
NC NC_000913 chromosomes

In the Sprout Database, the contig ID is generally formed by concatenating the genome ID to the RefSeq accession number for the original sequence separated by a colon. So, the NMPDR contig ID 83333.1:NC_000913 indicates an E Coli contig (the 83333.1 part) from a RefSeq chromosome (the NC_000913 part).

Notice to NMPDR Users - The NMPDR BRC contract has ended and bacterial data from NMPDR has been transferred to PATRIC (http://www.patricbrc.org), a new consolidated BRC for all NIAID category A-C priority pathogenic bacteria. NMPDR was a collaboration among researchers from the Computation Institute of the University of Chicago, the Fellowship for Interpretation of Genomes (FIG), Argonne National Laboratory, and the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at the University of Illinois. NMPDR is funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, National Institutes of Health, Department of Health and Human Services, under Contract HHSN266200400042C.
